Fast Start Lifts Millikin Women’s Basketball

         The Millikin women's basketball team took advantage of a fast start to defeat Elmhurst University 70-59 on February 20 at the Griswold Center in Decatur, Illinois.

         Millikin jumped out to a 16-5 lead in the first five minutes of the game and never looked back. The Big Blue led 28-9 at the end of the first quarter and 39-26 at halftime. Millikin led the entire game holding its largest lead of 23 points in the second quarter. Elmhurst played better in the second half outscoring the Big Blue by two points, but could never get the Millikin lead under double digits.

         Millikin shot 43 percent (25-58) from the field including going 7-for-18 (39 percent) from 3-point range. Elmhurst made 20 of 48 (42 percent) from the field making 5-12 (42 percent) from long range. Elmhurst owned the rebounding battle 34-29. Millikin forced Elmhurst into 23 turnovers while committing 12.

         Ten players scored for the Big Blue, led by Elyce Knudsen with 14 points. Aubrey Staton added 12 points followed by senior Jordan Hildebrand with 11 and five rebounds. Abby Ratsch scored nine points and had a team high six rebounds.

         Marissa Urso and Kelly Weyhrich each scored 11 points to lead the Bluejays.

         Millikin is now 7-3 while Elmhurst falls to 2-8.

         Millikin hosts Augustana on February 23 at 7 p.m. in a makeup game.
