Stockton Runs Win Streak to 14 Straight, 63-50

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (16-3, 10-2 NJAC) extended their school-record winning streak to 14 straight games with a 63-50 win over William Paterson (11-8, 7-5 NJAC) on Saturday afternoon. Lea Mendolla (Nutley/Mt. St. Dominic) went 4-5 from behind the arc and led the Ospreys with 18 points. Stockton held the Pioneers to just 29.9% (20-67) shooting while hitting 53.7% (22-41) for the game, including 11-18 (61.1%) during the second half.

Stockton closed the first quarter with a 7-1 run for a 17-11 lead after one point. The spurt consisted of two points each by Najha Treadwell (Cinnaminson/Cinnaminson) and April Peterson (Lafayette/High Point Regional) sandwiched a three-pointer by Marina Lukianov (Howell/Howell).

The Ospreys threatened to run away from William Paterson in the second period, stretching the lead to 28-14 as Mendolla scored seven points during an 11-0 outburst. The Pioneers ended the first half on a 9-2 spurt to cut the lead to 30-23 at the break. Treadwell and Mendolla led the Ospreys with eight and seven points respectively for Stockton during the first half.

Stockton struggled during the third frame as they could not find a way to put the game away. Numerous turnovers sabotaged the Ospreys and the margin shrunk to four before they managed to build a 47-38 lead after three quarters. Nine points by Taylor Christina (Franklinville/Delsea) scored nine of Stockton's 17 points in the period.

The Ospreys pulled away in the final stanza, as they pushed the lead to 59-42 with a 12-2 run highlighted by eight points from Mendolla. The Ospreys led by at least 11 points the rest of the way and posted their 14th consecutive win, 63-50.

In addition to Mendolla's 18 points, Treadwell registered her third double-double in the last four games with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Christina added 11 markers while Sasha Williams (Cherry Hill/CH West) led all players with game-highs of 17 rebounds and four blocks. Williams also dished a team-high four assists and chipped in with nine points.

Brittany Harden led the Pioneers with 13 points and a game-high five steals. Harden went over the 1,000-point mark for her career on a foul shot with 2:19 remaining in the game. Nikole Williams added 10 markers as they only other player in double figures for William Paterson.

Stockton will play again on Monday night as the Ospreys travel to Rutgers-Newark for a makeup game at 6 p.m. The contest was postponed on January 23.
