GREENVILLE, Pa. – Sophomore Hannah Stoneman (Sugarcreek, Ohio/Hiland) posted her first career double-double, scoring 22 points and grabbing 11 rebounds to lead Thiel to a 58-53 win over the Penn State Behrend Lions Tuesday evening.
The Tomcats (1-2) never trailed in the contest, racing out to an early 13-3 advantage through six minutes of play. Thiel continued to add to their lead, as they took a 31-20 margin to the locker room for half. A back and forth second half saw Thiel's 11-point lead whittled down to three with three seconds to play. The Lions (1-2) fouled Stoneman on the ensuing inbounds to send her to the line with the game still hanging in the balance. The second-year forward calmly knocked down both free throws to give Thiel its first win of the season.
Stoneman was a perfect 8-for-8 from the charity stripe, and shot 70% (7-for-10) from the field. Her 22 points matches a career and season-high, and her 11 rebounds are also a career-best for the young forward from Sugarcreek, Ohio.
Senior Bethany Hines (Youngstown, Ohio/Youngstown Early College) tallied seven points, seven rebounds and two assists in 31 minutes on the court for the Tomcats. Freshman forward Laken Shields (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) scored six points while dishing out a team-best six assists and sophomore guard Kayla Welty (Portville, NY/Portville ) chipped in six points, three assists and two steals.
In the first, Thiel used a 15-4 run to take a 31-20 lead at the half. The Lions cut the deficit to single digits in the second half, as a 12-2 run with nine minutes to play cut Thiel's lead down to four (46-42). The Lions, however, did not have answer for Stoneman, who scored eight of her team's final 12 points to seal the win for the Tomcats.
