Tara VanWeerdhuizen had 12 points, 13 rebounds and eight blocks Monday night to lead visiting Corban University to a 74-51 non-conference women's basketball win over Pacific Lutheran University in Olson Auditorium.
Corban improved its season record to 10-4, while Pacific Lutheran took its sixth loss in 10 games.
VanWeerdhuizen, a 6-2 frosh center from Spokane, dominated the game in the paint on both ends of the floor. She scored all of her points within a few feet of the basket, and in addition to her eight blocks she altered numerous other attempts by the Lutes. As a result, PLU shot just 27 percent (18-for-68) from the field.
Pacific Lutheran sophomore center Samantha Potter, managed just two points and three rebounds, well below her team leading averages of 15.2 points and 9.9 rebounds per game.
The Lutes stayed with the Warriors through most of the first half until a late flurry gave the visitors a 38-30 lead at the intermission. Coming out of the break, PLU scored the first seven points of the half on a three-point basket by Sara Backstrom, Potter's layup, and a pair of Katelyn Smith free throws. That made the scored 38-37 with 17:43 to play.
Corban responded with an 18-3 run over the next 7 1/2 minutes to take a 56-40 advantage. The visitor's biggest lead of the game came at 71-46 on Haley Holboke's jumper with 5:24 to play.
A total of four Corban players scored in double figures, led by VanWeerdhuizen. Elizabeth Downs and Shayla Fetters both scored 11 points and Emily Tsugawa added 10 points and nine assists. The Warriors shot an even 50 percent for the game 30-for-60).
For Pacific Lutheran, Shelly Kilcup scored a game-high 21 points, including 4-for-7 accuracy from beyond the three-point line. The sophomore guard also added five rebounds and four steals to her total. Smith was PLU's only other player in double figures, scoring 10 points. Smith and Chrissy Swope both had seven rebounds for the Lutes, who lost that battle, 49-40.
PLU returns to Northwest Conference action at 6 p.m. Friday when it hosts the Whitworth Pirates.
