Yellowjackets Come Up Just Short At Stout

More news about: UW-Superior

After a couple of tough home losses last week, the Yellowjacket women's basketball team hit the road for Menomonie for a midweek matchup against UW-Stout.  This week things were much closer, but the result was the same.

Kailee McDonald (Cambridge, Minn.) hit a layup with 2:06 to play in the second half to give the Yellowjackets a 68-66 lead.  However, 20 seconds later Kayla Windt hit a three-pointer to give the Blue Devils a one-point lead, a lead they wouldn't surrender, and the Yellowjackets fell 73-68.

The Yellowjackets fell behind early, trailing the Blue Devils 8-0 in the first 90 seconds of play, but they battled back and took their first lead of the game, 14-13, just three minutes later on a layup by Connie Urmanski (Edgar, Wisconsin).  The rest of the first half was a seesaw battle and saw the Yellowjackets head to half time with a 39-36 lead.

Bri Davis (Hermantown, Minn.) and Hailey Hart (Osseo, Wis.) had ten points apiece in the first half for the Yellowjackets.

The second half was more of the same, as neither team was able to build a cushion of more than five points.  In fact, the game was tied six different times in the second half alone.  The Yellowjackets were able to build the lead up to five points, but that was early on in the half, when Kelsey Thingvold (Crystal, Minn.) hit a jump shot 3:29 into the half.  Thingvold would lead the Yellowjackets with ten points in the second half.  After the aforementioned three-pointer by Windt, Whitney Rawdon hit a layup with 44 seconds to play to stretch the Stout lead to three at 71-68.  Sami Schoeder closed out the scoring, hitting a pair of free throws with ten seconds remaining.

Thingvold led the way for the Yellowjackets offensively, scoring 18 points as four Yellowjacket starters found their way into double figures.  Davis contributed 16 points, while Urmanski scored 15 and Hart 13 for the Yellowjackets, who shot 41.9% from the field for the game.  Davis, Thingvold and Hart each hit double-digits in rebounds as well, pulling down 12, 11 and 10 respectively.  Thingvold led the team with three assists.

Three-point shooting was a struggle for the Yellowjackets, as they went 2-12 from outside the arc.  Urmanski and Britnee Blake (Superior, Wis.) hit the three-point shots.

Rawdon and Schoeder had 19 points apiece to lead Stout.

The Yellowjackets return home on Saturday, January 22 when they host UW-Platteville at Mertz Mortorelli Gym at 3:00 p.m.
