Tartans Top a Ranked WashU Team at Home for Fourth Time in Five Years

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team topped 13th-ranked Washington University in St. Louis (WashU) by a 64-61 score on Friday, January 16 to advance to 10-3 for the season. The University Athletic Association (UAA) victory puts the Tartans at 2-0 in the league while the Bears fall to 10-3 overall and 0-2 in the UAA.

How it Happened

  • WashU opened the game with a three-pointer by Ryan Cohen.
  • The Tartans took their first lead at 7-4 on a triple by senior Buckley DeJardin at 14:36 of the first half.
  • WashU took a 15-10 lead halfway through the first frame before the Tartans ran off nine straight points ending on second-chance layup by graduate student Nolan Casey.
  • With 3:48 to play, Anthony Przybilla made a layup for the Bears that swapped the lead again, with the visitors leading 25-24.
  • An 8-0 run to end the half by the Tartans gave them a 32-25 lead at the break with sophomore Evan Mirazimi scoring the final basket with a layup off a dish by graduate student Nikola Dimitrijevic.
  • DeJardin's second three-pointer of the second half gave the Tartans their largest lead at 12 points with 14:50 showing on the clock.
  • A 14-4 run by the Bears, led by 12 straight points by Connor May, cut the deficit to two points four minutes later.
  • WashU took its first lead of the second half on a three-pointer from the corner by Yogi Oliff with 3:02 to play which made it 60-59.
  • The Tartans took back the lead after junior Isaac Higgs hit a free throw and DeJardin converted a fast-break layup following a steal by graduate student Sam Adusei with 1:48 to play.
  • Two layup attempts by the Bears fell short and Dimitrijevic grabbed the rebound and converted one of two free throws to put the Tartans up three with six seconds to go.
  • The triple attempt by May at the buzzer was contested and short, giving the Tartans their second UAA win of the season.

  • Higgs finished with 13 points while Adusei had 12 and Mirazimi 10.
  • Dimitrijevic had 10 rebounds and seven points to go with a career-best seven blocks.

  • Dimitrijevic's seven blocks is the most in a game since Jack Serbin had seven against Penn State Beaver on November 30, 2014.
