Concordia Texas rallies to defeat Sul Ross State, 93-90

AUSTIN, Texas – Josh Sanchez scored 26 points to lead the Concordia University Texas men's basketball team to a 93-90 American Southwest Conference victory over Sul Ross State on Saturday at Concordia Fieldhouse.

The Tornados (4-2, 2-2 ASC) overcame a six-point deficit in the final seven minutes to knock off the league-leading Lobos (4-3, 3-1 ASC).

Sul Ross State, which shot 52.5 percent (32-of-61), took a 74-68 lead on Darrell Gardner's free throw with 6:40 to play.

Concordia Texas used an 18-11 spurt to take a one-point lead after Sanchez connected on a layup five minutes later.

The Tornados led the rest of the way and knocked down seven shots from the charity stripe to close out the three-point win.

Sanchez was 8-of-15 from the floor, including 1-for-3 from beyond the arc. The Houston native also connected on nine of his 13 free throw attempts.

Dwayne Patterson poured in 20 points and pulled down a team-high eight boards in 27 minutes off the bench. Brett DeMetrotion scored 16, while Henry Riasco added 11 and Andre Potts chipped in with 10.

Mychal Pinson led a quartet of Lobos into double figures with 23 points, while Percy Settle scored 21 and grabbed a game-best nine rebounds.

Sul Ross State was forced to battle back after Concordia built a 34-19 lead in the first half. The Lobos scored 27 of the final 41 points of the opening period to pull within two.

In the second half, Sul Ross State was able to take a 61-60 advantage after Pinson made a layup at the 11:47 mark. From there, the Lobos increased their advantage to six over the next five minutes before the Tornados started their comeback.

Concordia also won the battle on the boards, 37-34, and forced 21 turnovers.

The Tornados will return to action on Saturday, Dec. 14, when the squad hosts Mary Hardin-Baylor. Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m.
