(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) - The Thomas More College men's basketball team fell, 85-69, to Capital University tonight (Saturday, November 16, 2013) in both teams' season opener at the Connor Convocation Center in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
With the loss, the Saints fall to 0-1, and with the win, the Crusaders improve to 1-0.
Capital jumped out to a 7-2 lead with 16:18 to play in the first quarter when Daniel Ocke made a lay-up. Senior guard D'Carlo Hayes (Louisville, Ky./Male) made a three-pointer with 15:03 to play in the half to cut the lead to 7-5. The Crusaders used an 18-10 run to build a 25-15 lead with 5:29 to play in the half when AJ Dixon made one-of-two free-throws. The Saints answered with a 5-2 run capped by two free-throws by junior forward Chris Richard (Louisville, Ky./Southern) to cut the lead to 27-20 with 4:34 to play in the opening half. Capital came right back to increase its lead to 43-26 when Ben Jackson capped a 16-6 run with five-seconds to play in the opening half. Junior guard/forward Drew Mumford (Louisville, Ky./Christian Academy) made three free-throws with one-second to play in the half to cut the Crusaders' lead to 43-29 at halftime.
Thomas More opened the second half on a 22-15 run to cut the lead to 58-51 with 11:22 to play in the game when Mumford made two free-throws. That would be as close as the Saints would come as Capital closed the game on a 27-18 run for the 85-69 victory.
Mumford led all scorers with 24, while Richard joined him in double-figure scoring with 14 points. Mumford led the team on the boards with six rebounds and Richard added five. Hayes led the team in assists with four.
Thomas More returns to the court on Wednesday (November 20) when it travels to Cincinnati, Ohio to play across-the-river rival, the College of Mount St. Joseph in the Bridge Shootout. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Harrington Center.
