LOUDONVILLE, NY (www.NJCUGothicKnights.com) | New Jersey City University sixth-year head men's basketball coach Marc Brown, considered the greatest player in Siena College men's basketball history, will come out of retirement on Thursday, July 19 when the all-time great dawns a Saints uniform for the first time in 21 years as a starting point guard for the inaugural Siena Legends game. The contest will be played in that school's 4,000 seat Alumni Recreation Center.
Brown, the 2011 D3hoops.com Atlantic Region Coach of the Year, will be one of 30 former Siena players to suit up for the game, which is expected to draw a crowd of several thousand to that campus. The highly-anticipated event in the Albany region will begin with a pre-game meet and greet at 5 p.m. and contests at 6 p.m. prior to the tip-off of the featured game at 7 p.m.
In five seasons as Gothic Knight head coach, Brown, who turned 43 earlier this month, has led NJCU to a 73-58 record (.557) in 131 games, four post-season appearances, one NCAA Division III Tournament, and the 2011 New Jersey Athletic Conference championship.
Siena bestowed the ultimate honor on Brown on December 13, 2010 when has his legendary No. 4 jersey was retired at the Times Union Center in Albany, NY between games of a basketball doubleheader that included NJCU and Siena.
The 10 starters for the inaugural Siena Legends game were decided after a two week on-line vote in which nearly 7,000 votes were cast. In a sign of respect for his legendary career at the school, Brown was the oldest player voted into the starting lineup and the only player whose career concluded prior to 2002. He received the sixth most votes in the starting lineup poll.
