A volume of crowd noise not recalled by North Central College
faithful in more than 20 years swelled inside Merner Field House on
Saturday, as the Cardinals thrilled their home supporters with a
dynamic second-half scoring run and defeated Wheaton College,
75-58, in the championship game of the College Conference of
Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Men's Basketball Tournament.
Playing in front of a capacity crowd with an automatic bid to the
NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship on the line, North
Central broke open a nip-and-tuck affair with a 26-5 second-half
surge and claimed the second CCIW Tournament title since the
institution of the event in 2006. The Cardinals have won the CCIW's
regular-season and tournament titles in the same season for the
first time.
"It's a good win for our program and I'm happy for our players and
coaches," said North Central head coach Todd
Raridon, whose Cardinals lost a pair of close games to
Wheaton in the regular season. "The last two games, they'd had our
number. The first half could have gone either way, and I felt like
we didn't play very well, but the guys never quit. They know you
can't just walk onto the court and beat somebody; we just continued
to put forth effort."
North Central was paced by the efforts of senior
guard Kevin
Gillespie, who finished with a game-high 22 points, five
assists and three steals. Gillespie scored 14 points, making 4 of 5
three-point shots, in the decisive second period.
"I told myself going into this game that I needed to step up and
lead us to victory," Gillespie said. "I started making shots,
forcing them to come out on me more, and then I could penetrate and
look to my teammates. When it gets to that point, it makes things
easy and more fun to play."
The lead changed hands five times in the early going, though the
Cardinals were able to build a 27-20 advantage with 4:37 remaining
in the first period. Wheaton scored on a pair of tip-ins by Nathan
Haynes and Spencer Schultze to spark a 9-0 run to put the Thunder
in front, and the visitors held a 31-28 advantage in the final
seconds of the half before Gillespie sank a three-pointer to send
the contest into halftime tied, 31-31.
Gillespie knocked down another triple soon after play resumed to
give the Cardinals a 36-33 edge, but two straight inside baskets by
Wheaton's Tim McCrary nudged the Thunder back in front, 37-36.
Gillespie responded with a jumper and a three-pointer to launch
what would be the decisive rally of the evening, which was capped
off by a series of four three-pointers by Gillespie, Aaron
Tiknis, Vince
Kmiec and Derek
Raridon in a two-minute span that opened up a 62-42
lead and brought the largest home crowd of the season to its
feet.
"I was so grateful that all the fans came out," Gillespie said.
"We knew Wheaton was going to bring a huge fan base, but this is by
far the biggest crowd I've seen in my four years here and coming
out and seeing a crowd like that just gets you amped up even
more."
The Cardinals were never threatened from then on, leading by at
least 13 points the rest of the way. Gillespie made 8 of 14 shots
on the evening, including 6 of 9 three-pointers, in playing all 40
minutes for the second straight night.
"The minute Kevin got going, everything else just fell into place
with the other guys," Todd
Raridon ssaid. "Kevin's our senior point guard, and
that's what you want out of your point guard. We talked to him
during a timeout, and he said he didn't want to come out. The
coaches call him a bulldog, he just stays in there and continues to
play. I'm happy for him because he's a senior and his leadership
has been phenomenal this season. He's a big reason for our
success."
Aaron
Tiknis added 11 points and game highs of nine
rebounds and seven assists for the Cardinals, while Charlie
Rosenberg put up 10 points and eight boards. North
Central outrebounded the Thunder, 36-21, and owned a 15-6 advantage
in second-chance points.
Wheaton was led by Jeremy Pflederer's 13 points, while Tyler
Peters scored 11, McCrary put up 11 and Schultze added 10.
Pairings and host sites for the Division III Men's Basketball
Championship will be announced Monday at 11 a.m. Central time
