OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Wesley College's Kevin Johnson (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) scored his 1,000th career point and notched a double-double in the Wolverines' 90-64 win over Stevenson.
The senior guard scored 13 points in the game after entering the night 11 shy of 1,000. He became the 10th player to reach the milestone with a basket with 16 minutes remaining in the game that spread Wesley's lead to 57-40. He later added another field goal and ended the night with 1,002 points.
The victory extended Wesley's winning streak to nine games as the Wolverines remained a half game behind St. Mary's (Md.) in the Capital Athletic Conference standings.
Three other players also scored in double figures in the blowout. Darrell Johnson (New Castle, Del./Howard) netted a game-high 21 on 10-of-16 shooting and also snagged six boards. Sixth man Rudy Thomas (Milton, Del./Sussex Tech) continued his torrid shooting, hitting 3-of-5 threes on his way to 18 points and also matched Eric Selby (Wilmington, Del./Howard) for the team lead with five assists. Sean McAndrew (Lanoka Harbor, N.J./Lacey Township) manuevered inside for 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting.
With the game tied early at 10-10, the Wolverines (14-6, 10-1 CAC) erupted for an 18-3 run that broke the game open and never looked back.
A three-pointer by the Mustangs' (6-15, 2-10 CAC) Greg Woody cut the lead to 13 with 17 minutes to go, but Darrell Johnson scored on Wesley's next possession to start a 26-6 run that gave the Wolverines a 33-point advantage with 8:29 left.
Woody led Stevenson with 20 points, but shot just 5-of-15 and turned the ball over seven times. Danny Murphy had 11 points and 11 rebounds, while Joe Hindle scored 10 points to go with four steals.
It is the third time Wesley has reached 90 points in its current win streak.
