Yellowjackets Drop Another Close One

More news about: UW-Superior

We've seen this show before during the 2010-11 season.  The Yellowjacket men's basketball game in a tight game, and unfortunately they come up just a bit short.  Despite a one-point lead at the break and a hot-shooting team in the second half, the Eagles were just a bit better, sending the 'Jackets home with an 81-79 defeat.

All four losses for the Yellowjackets this season have been tight, as they have lost the games by a total of 16 points.

Tony Mane hit a jump shot with 43 seconds left to stretch the lead to three at 80-77.  After a Marcus Helland (Baldwin, Wis.) layup made it a one-point game, Mane made a free throw to provide the final two-point margin.

The first half of the night was back and forth, with neither team holding a lead greater than four points.  Ben Aalfs (Hutchinson, Minn.) scored ten points in the first half, hitting a three-pointer with three seconds left on the clock to provide the 'Jackets with a one-point lead.  Aalfs and Greg Roeder (Mercer, Wis.) scored the last 11 points of the first half over the final four minutes to pull the 'Jackets ahead.  Roeder also scored ten in the first half.

In the early minutes of the second half both teams came out hot, combining to hit 18 of the first 20 shots in the half.  During that time, the Yellowjackets built a lead of ten points, going ahead 59-49 with 14:19 to play.  La Crosse would come back firing, continuing their hot shooting, tying the game at 61-61 with just under nine minutes to play.  The Eagles would build up a seven-point lead as time ticked away, but Dan Culy (Rice Lake, Wis.) would score six straight points to pull the 'Jackets back to within three with under three to play.  A pair of free throws and a tip-in by Aalfs would make it a one-point game before Mane would hit the final three points.  The 'Jackets were able to get a final shot away, but the attempt by Dustin Ritchie (Superior, Wis.) wouldn't drop, sealing the win for the Eagles.

Jake Smith (Rhinelander, Wis.)
led the Yellowjackets with 24 points and was tied with Helland for the team lead in rebounds with six.  Ritchie led the way with six assists, while Smith and Culy had two steals apiece.  Helland and Aalfs each finished the game with 14 points.

The Yellowjackets shot 51.6% from the field, including 42.1% (8-19) from three-point range.  La Crosse shot 57.7% for the game, including a remarkable 68% in the second half.  They were 3-9 from three-point land in the game.

Mane finished the night with a game-high 31 points, while Al Chery had 20 to lead La Crosse.
