After 11 days stuffed full of matchups between ranked teams, the top spot in the women's Top 25 poll is up for grabs.
No. 7 UW-Stevens Point had a chance to bolster its case for the top spot when the Pointers travelled to No. 3 St. Thomas. The depleted Tommies played without All-American forward Taylor Young and starting center Maggie Weiers. With the Pointers leading 48-41, St. Thomas ripped off a 12-0 run including back-to-back threes from Kelly Brandenburg and Hannah Hughes. Six teams received a No. 1 vote in the preseason poll and only one is still undefeated -- DePauw. The fourth-ranked Tigers cruised past No. 5 Illinois Wesleyan 75-52 in Bloomington. The Tigers adjusted to the Titans' pressing defense midway through the first half built a 19-point advantage at the break. DePauw forwards Ellie Pearson and Alex Gassaway combined for 31 points and Kate Walker dished out seven assists. The Titans had eight assists and 16 turnovers.
No. 9 Washington U. punished No. 21 Coe 81-46 as the Bears shot 49 percent from the field (32-for-65) and outrebounded the Kohawks by 19. No. 17 Tufts continues to win with defense. The Jumbos stymied Brandeis 70-32 and have held three of their first four opponents under 40 points.
No. 20 Carthage overcame 19 turnovers to beat Chicago 68-46. Brittany Hicks tallied a double-double for No. 18 York (Pa.) which rallied to beat Gettysburg 63-58.
Men's recap
No. 4 Middlebury gutted out a win at Plattsburgh State 80-73 in a game that featured 12 lead changes in the second half. The Cardinals led by nine early in the second half before the Panthers rallied to create the see-saw finish. Jake Wolfin's layup and Joey Kizel's free throws in the final 15 seconds sealed the victory.
John DiBartolomeo scored 24 points to lead Rochester past No. 22 Ohio Wesleyan 83-68. Albertus Magnus opened its home schedule with a win over No. 23 Wesleyan 82-73, despite Mike Callaghan's 23 points and 12 rebounds.
Mike Cherry hit a jumper with three seconds left to lift Christopher Newport over John Carroll 85-84. All five Lycoming starters scored double-figures as the Warriors won a track meet over Wilkes, 109-102 in overtime. Jerald Williams finished three steals short of an unconventional triple-double (12 points, 17 assists and seven steals).
