After playing five teams outside the Division to start the season, the Hope men made a nice Division III debut with a 79-78 win over No. 13 Wheaton (Ill.) at the MIAA-CCIW challenge.
Hope led for most of the game until Wheaton went in front 76-75 on a Jeremy Pflederer three-pointer with 1:33 left. The Thunder pushed its lead to three with 17 seconds left before Hope's David Krombeen drew a foul and converted two free throws. On the ensuing Wheaton possession, Krombeen stole the ball and fed Colton Overway who was fouled. Overway hit both free throws to give Hope the victory. The Flying Dutchmen improve to 5-1 with their sole loss to Division I Western Michigan. Calvin beat Carthage 71-58 in the other half of the MIAA-CCIW challenge.
No. 3 Amherst emerged unscathed from its showdown with fellow Massachusetts unbeaten, Springfield. The Lord Jeffs knocked off the homestanding Pride 81-71. Aaron Toomey scored 21 points for Amherst and made all eight of his free throw attempts in the game's final minute. Alex Berthiaume scored 32 points for the Pride.
Nazareth defeated No. 12 Rochester for the second time in two weeks, this time beating the Yellowjackets in their gym, 66-64. The Golden Flyers missed the front end of three one-and-one attempts in the game's final minute, but Rochester couldn't capitalize. Nazareth advances to the final of the Wendy's College Classic where it will play Hobart. The Statesmen beat Brockport State 71-70 with a late layup.
Salisbury surged into the Top 25 this week after beating Preseason No. 1 Virginia Wesleyan, but it's going to be a short stay in the poll for the Sea Gulls. They dropped their second straight, this time falling at home to John Jay, 76-73. Jerome Alexander rolled up 29 points for the Bloodhounds. Grinnell topped St. Norbert 108-98 in the MWC opener for both teams.
Women's action
Four teams received first place votes in the SCAC East Division's preseason poll and two of them met on Friday night. Centre defeated Millsaps 66-61 on the road after a nearly two-week layoff since its last game. Maggie Prewitt had 25 points for the Colonels, including four free throws in the final minute. Lovie Love tallied 19 for the Majors. No. 3 George Fox got a scare in its conference opener, but hung on to beat Whitman 54-53.
