What was a good night for Carleton will end up being a bad one for someone else. The Knights upset No. 3 St. Thomas 73-67 in the MIAC semifinals, putting the Tommies in position to take away one of the 19 at-large bids.
Jeremy Sutherland, normally Carleton's defensive force, lit up the Tommies for 20 points, 18 in the second half to lift Carleton to its first-ever MIAC tournament road victory. The Knights, who will travel to Gustavus Adolphus for the conference title game, shot 65 percent from the floor in the second half, including 6-for-9 from three-point range. Thursday's men's scores.
That means someone else who was on the bubble for making the NCAA tournament now needs to win their conference tournament or else. Check out our best guess at which teams are on that bubble.
&&g-boxl&&St. Mary's (Md.) knows how precarious that position can be. The Seahawks were highly ranked in the last published regional rankings in 2009 but lost in the CAC tournament to Marymount and missed the NCAA tournament entirely. This year the Seahawks made sure to avoid the same fate as they pasted the Saints 95-62. They will face surging Wesley, which won its 12th game in 13 tries and ousted York (Pa.) 94-81.
The WIAC nearly took a bid away from someone as well, as UW-Stevens Point and UW-Whitewater each trailed in their semifinal games, but the Pointers rallied to beat UW-Stout 87-72 and the Warhawks defeated UW-Superior 86-70. The rest of the west went for chalk as well, with No. 5 Whitworth beating Lewis and Clark 89-65 to reach the NWC title game and No. 25 Central topping Dubuque 81-66.

Neither UW-Whitewater nor UW-Stevens Point is in the national rankings any longer, but one of them will get the WIAC automatic bid as both advanced in their semifinals. The Pointers defeated UW-Stout 82-74 despite 32 points from Julia Hirssig as the All-American finished her career with a flourish. Kelsey Hendrickson scored 30 points of her own in UW-Whitewater's victory over UW-Eau Claire 73-68. Redlands and Occidental advanced to the SCIAC finals, to be played Saturday afternoon at Oxy.
The women's Pool B candidates, few as they are, took a big hit Thursday night as Minnesota-Morris picked up its second regional loss, getting pounded 63-42 at home by Presentation. Morris now has a resume similar to Chapman's men in 2009: 16-2 in-region with a .441 SOS and an opponents' winning percentage ranked 373rd out of 430.
In other men's action, Nicholas Motta scored 28 points to lead Bridgewater State past Worcester State 73-59 and into the MASCAC finale where Framingham State awaits. Aaron Trigg had 27 for Gordon and the Scots rolled past Colby-Sawyer 77-58 in the CCC tournament. Albertus Magnus and Emerson advanced to the GNAC championship. Grove City will host Thomas More for the PAC title.
