Mass. confusion

All three ranked teams based out of Massachusetts were in action Tuesday, and the two playing at home both lost.

No. 9 Amherst fell to Brandeis 73-58 in a rematch of the game that sent the Lord Jeffs to the Final Four last season. Steve DeLuca had 23 points and 12 rebounds to pace the 9-5 Judges, who have three wins against opponents who were ranked this season. Amherst dropped to 13-2. More men's scores on the scoreboard.

One of the teams that Brandeis beat earlier this season got a nice win, as Rhode Island College upset No. 15 Mass-Dartmouth, 69-66. It was the second consecutive time that RIC beat Mass-Dartmouth on the road, with the last being in last year's Little East title game. Mason Choice's 22 points paced the Anchormen, who at 5-1, evened things up in the LEC standings with Mass-Dartmouth.

&&g-boxl&&No. 16 Elms survived the upset brigade, nearly doubling up Lesley, 72-37. Salem State, which at 13-2 can argue for being best in Massachusetts as well, won its seventh in a row, beating Framingham State by 22. Aurora and Milwaukee School of Engineering each won to remain 1-2, a half-game apart in the Northern Athletics Conference's South Division standings. Juan Paulino had 26 points, 26 rebounds and six blocked shots for first-year program Wells, but it wasn't enough as Cazenovia senior guard Erik Sauer scored 35 in a 105-103 overtime win.

Ranked women's teams went 4-for-4 on the night, as Massachusetts-based NESCAC rivals No. 4 Amherst and No. 11 Tufts both won non-league affairs. Pennsylvania-based No. 15 Messiah got a big effort from Silalei Shani to beat Albright. No. 25 Muhlenberg also triumphed at Haverford. More women's scores on the scoreboard.

Eastern Connecticut beat Western Connecticut, snapping the Colonials 11-game win streak. Nutmeg State neighbor Wesleyan tied the team record for points with a 100-94 overtime win against Montclair State, behind a school-record tying 35 points from Lucy Sprung. Dani Dudek had 24 points and was one rebound shy of a triple-double as Stevens beat Hartwick. Bryttani Payton made the game-winning free throws with 1.9 seconds left as Virginia Wesleyan survived an upset bid by 1-11 Randolph. Randolph-Macon and Roanoke each won to keep pace in the ODAC's three-way tie for first.
