D-III's four get name on the floor

St. Johns, New Jersey City, Mississippi College and Emory and Henry each renamed their courts for legendary mens basketball coaches over the offseason as every Division III school already needed to do some work to paint the deeper mens three-point line.

Jim Smith, who has won 685 games at St. Johns, enters his 45th season as the Johnnies head coach this season. The floor will be dedicated as Jim and Adrienne Smith Court when SJU hosts St. Cloud State on Nov. 22.

Having a basketball court named in our honor in Sexton Arena is just a fantastic thing, Jim Smith said. Im honored and humbled and everything else in regards to it. It is a wonderful thing.

Charlie Brown, who went 483-218 in 25 seasons at New Jersey City, will have his name on the Gothic Knights home floor while his son, Marc, serves as interim coach for a second season. I am honored and humbled, said the honoree. Its a very, very special thing that doesnt happen to people too often and usually only at big-time Division I programs. So for people to think enough of me to honor me with my name on the court -- its hard to express how I feel. This has always been a special university to me and now its a final, lasting connection.

The playing court will renamed Charlie Brown Court prior to NJCUs 2008-09 season opener Saturday against York (N.Y.)

Emory and Henry replaces its parquet floor with a new maple floor and honors its longtime coach, Bob Johnson. He coached the Wasps for 27 years, to a record of 370-334 before stepping down before the 2007-08 season to focus on his cancer treatment.

Mike Jones, who went 331-108 in 16 years over two stints as Mississippi Colleges head coach, has his name on the Golden Dome floor. The ceremony will be held on Jan. 10.

"Coach Jones is so well-respected in our community and has done so much for Mississippi College, it was appropriate to bestow this honor upon him", said school president Lee Royce. "He is almost an iconic figure for our college and he has represented us with such dignity for two decades. Im proud for him and thankful we were able to make this happen."

In addition to a new playing surface, other renovations to A. E. Wood Coliseum this summer have included a new mechanical bleacher system on the floor level seating and new chairback seating on both sides of the court.
